The FIRST MONODRAMA FESTIVAL is based on the ancient Greek drama tradition- the origin of European theater in which the Greek tragedy was born out of the dialogue between a single actor and a choir. In contrast, the Monodrama was defined by the performance of a single actor.
This type of International Monodrama Festival is to date the first of its kind in Austria.
The theme of the first Festival 2011 was “Women of Post-Emancipation“.
Our production “Leaving Ziller Valley” has been created specifically for this festival and the selected theme is portrayed from a Tyrolean point of view.
We want to address social and political themes which have not yet been dealt with artistically in the region Tyrol to start an international dialogue.
The FIRST MONODRAMA FESTIVAL is also open to a wider dramatic exploration of the theme through the lens of film and music. We are aiming for a widely ranged, international program and want to offer an evening of “experimental art” dealing with “possibilities and impossibilities of our existence”, to offer the possibility for projection of people’s imagination, to give opportunities to take a peek into individual utopias, and to help to detecting conflicts between private and social experience in a poetic manner.
Five actresses and directors from five different nations- Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, and Italy- were presenting their works on two evenings, in various theatrical and cinematic forms. The solo-performance pieces dealt with everyday situations of five women in different stages of their lives in the globalized world of the 21st Century. They talked about their wishes and aspirations within their family structures, their work, but also their chasms, fears and despair, about the complicated and very different cultural determinism, and about life as a single woman in a modern world which requires flexibility and mobility at all times.
All of the productions have been world premieres. The plays were specifically produced for the festival and the movie opened in Austria after winning the Adolf Grimme Price in Germany.
“I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being. “ (Oscar Wilde)
The festival is designed to provide an open platform for people in the region Zillertal, Tyrol and international guests and to invite for a discussion and exchange between artists and audience.
